Prof. Dr. Thomas Saalfeld

The Vice-President for Research

  • chairs the Standing Commission for Research and Early-Career Researchers.

He is responsible for:

  • promoting research throughout the University;
  • promoting early-career researchers at the University;
  • stimulating exchange and transfer between researchers inside and stakeholders outside the university;
  • matters of internationalization in his area of responsibility;
  • matters of equality in his area of responsibility;
  • matters relating to the Commissioner for European Research Programmes

Prof. Dr. Thomas Saalfeld has been Vice President for Research at the University of Bamberg since 1 October 2020, where he has held the Chair of Comparative Political Science since 2009. From 2010 to 2020, he was Director of the Bamberg Graduate School of Social Sciences (BAGSS), which was funded under the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments between  2012 and 2019. During this period, BAGSS established itself an international and multidisciplinary center for the promotion and training of early-career researchers.

In his research, he  is particularly interested in parliaments, members of parliament, political parties and representation in European democracies. In recent years, he has focused on the representation of members of parliament of immigrant and ethnic-minority origin in Britain and Germany, and on the empirical study coalitions. He is currently leading a DFG-funded research project on the automated extraction and quantitative analysis of legislative speeches in the national and some regional parliaments in Germany and the UK as well as the Israeli Knesset.

Between 1980 and 1987, Thomas Saalfeld studied Political Science, Modern History and Communication Studies at the  University of Munich and (for one year) the University of Hull (Great Britain). In 1993, he was awarded his doctorate with a thesis on the German Bundestag at the University of Munich. Before joining Bamberg, he held academic positions at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich and the Technical University of Dresden in Germany and the Universities of Hull and Kent in Great Britain. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (AcSS) and the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) in the United Kingdom.
