Inhalt

Content
In the research seminar, students undergo the entire process of quantitative empirical social research from the identification of a research question over the formulation of theoretically deducted hypotheses to empirical analyses. Over a period of two consecutive semesters, students will conduct their own research projects in the field of sociological of education. The empirical analyses will be based on a selected starting cohort of the German National Educational Panel Study (NEPS). The first part of the seminar (Summer term 2022) will be devoted to identifying a relevant research question against the background of the current state of research, deriving theory-guided hypotheses and developing a suitable research design. The second part of the seminar (Winter term 2022/23) will be devoted to working with the data and transferring the findings of the projects into a scientific research article.

Inhalt
Much of the theoretical and empirical sociological research on social mobility is concerned with descriptions and explanations for social reproduction, i.e. the association between social origins and social destinations. In this seminar, we specifically seek for explanations for upward social mobility. Upward social mobility describes situations when, for example, children surpass their parents’ educational attainment or social status. As a starting point of the course, we will review all major theoretical accounts that provide explanations for social reproduction before we approach the issue of upward social mobility more specifically and in all its theoretical facets. The course is designed as a project seminar, which means that – based on rigour sociological reasoning – we will develop own ideas why some individuals manage to be upwardly mobile while others don’t. We will also test our theoretical ideas with empirical data and students will have the opportunity to conduct their own empirical data analyses.
