Persistent Identifier (DOI, ORCID)
To reliably and permanently find, identify and cite electronically published data of any kind the data need a persistent identifier. A persistent identifier is a clear label for a digital object, it stays the same even when the name or the memory location of a publication changes.
Examples for persistent identifiers are URN (Uniform Resource Name), DOI (Digital Object Identifier), ORCID (Open Research and Contributer ID), Research ID Thomson Reuters, Scopus Author ID, GND-Number (Integrated Authority-File Number), Google Scholar Citations Profi, ISNI (International Standard Name Identifier), ISBN and ISSN.
Digital Object Identifier (DOIs) make online publications citable.
In contrast to short-lived URL-addresses, the DOI survives as persistent identifier. The University Library assigns DOIs to digital objects (e.g. research material, essays/articles, digital reproductions, pictures) from members of the university.
Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) help to permanently and clearly identify electronically published documents and are thus comparable to an ISBN of a book. DOIs are connected with the object and not with the memory location. In case of a changing address (URL), the meta-data will be updated and the DOI-name remains valid. This ensures that the object is permanently traceable.
DOIs are frequently used for every kind of publication and research data, and due to their broad use have become an international quasi-standard.
Structure
Every DOI-name is a unique sequence of alphanumerical characters.
e.g. http://dx.doi.org/10.20378/irbo-49553
Citation
The common way to cite an electronic document with DOI is as follows:
Author. Title. Publisher. Identifier
According to the decision of the university administration from June 21st 2017, the University Library functions as data center for the assignment of Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) at the Otto-Friedrich-University of Bamberg.
The assignment of a DOI at the university is therefore carried out by the University Library.
The University Library ensures the permanent availability of the object and the meta-data as well as the quality and completeness of the meta-data.
If you have any questions regarding the DOI-assignment, please, contact publizieren@uni-bamberg.de.
Bamberg University Library assigns DOIs to permanently published scientific documents from members of the university, e.g. articles in Open-Access-Journals, pre-prints and post-prints, congress contributions, videos, pictures, gray literature, …
Your documents are permanently published in full text on the Current Research Information System (FIS) .
We automatically assign DOIs to new electronic publications on FIS.
Upon request, it is possible to assign DOIs retroperspectively to already published documents on FIS. Please, direct your request to fis(at)uni-bamberg.de and include title, author and if possible the FIS-Handle (5-digit number at the end of the URL at the front door on FIS).
In case you have any questions regarding DOI-assignment, please, contact Barbara Ziegler or fis(at)uni-bamberg.de.
