Career and Educational Prospects
Having completed studies in Archaeology, you are able to work responsibly on archaeological projects. Due to the modern and interdisciplinary focus of this programme, you are qualified for relevant specialist positions, e.g. in archaeological heritage conservation, in museums or in private excavation firms. The bachelor’s degree qualifies you to pursue a cumulative master’s degree programme in an archaeological discipline. You also have career prospects outside of archaeology, for example in the cultural management field or in publishing.
Comments on the Bamberg programme
Dr. Luitgard L?w, Director of the V?sterg?tlands Museum, Skara/Sweden
If you have a solid degree in Archaeology and the motivation to also take on tasks that, at first glance, do not have anything to do with archaeology, as well as having a view beyond the subjects covered in your studies and being open for social change – in short, being a generalist – then you have a good chance at getting a job in the museum world.
Dr. Stefan Pfaffenberger, Urban Archaeologist, City of Bamberg
The wide ranged degree programme in Archaeology offered in Bamberg not only provides a solid academic foundation, but also scores points for its practical approach and local relevance. For example, the branch office of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Protection in nearby Seehof Palace and the Department for Urban Archaeology of the City of Bamberg act as close cooperation partners. They are available as mediators of skills from the field of practical archaeological preservation as part of regular courses, as well as contacts for academic theses with a regional background.
Mario Ranzinger, M.Sc., Graduate of the bachelor’s Programme in Archaeology in 2014
I started my studies – a wide-ranging, practice-oriented BA programme in Archaeology that covered various material cultures – in October 2010 and successfully completed them in February 2014. As well as the generally high quality of life there, Bamberg shines due to its modern research approaches alongside its involvement in existing, traditional branches of research. Together with competency in professional and theoretical fields and the latest technology, an extensive course offering with a focus on practice enabled me to establish a solid foundation for my future professional life. Thanks to the wide range of subjects in the bachelor’s programme, which I could tailor to fit my own interests, I was able to take advantage of many professional opportunities in research and in the private sector after also completing a master’s degree in Geoarchaeology in Heidelberg. Especially with my job in the geophysical field – currently as a planning specialist in unexploded ordnance disposal – I have benefitted from the education in source criticism, research methodologies and remote sensing techniques that I gained in my bachelor’s studies. Due to the institute also having a welcoming and personal nature, I not only established a basis for my professional future in this field, but I was able to develop myself as a person, develop my character and grow in terms of assuming responsibility.
