Subproject 2
Longitudinal effects of global and domain-specific quality of stimulation in family, preschool, and elementary school on early childhood competence development
Subproject 2 analyses the development of language and more general cognitive competencies throughout early and middle childhood. The focus of interest lies on effects of structural and orientational conditions as well as processes in the family, preschool, and elementary school settings.
Extending the central research question from phase 1 of our project (which was to investigate the effect of quality of stimulation in the early settings family and preschool on early childhood development phase 2, as children went on to elementary school, emphasised additional and interactional effects of the next institutional setting in the children’s developmental course. The third phase of our project extends the longitudinal section to the last two years of elementary school and to the herewith related characteristics (e. g. changes in curriculum, transition to secondary school, more peer contacts).
Using predominantly data from the longitudinal study BiKS-3-10 subproject 2 therefore focusses on the following questions:
- In which way do qualitative and quantitative aspects of global and domain-specific quality of stimulation in the family and institutional setting change over the whole period from preschool to elementary school
- What is the nature of medium- and longterm effects of global and domain-specific quality of stimulation experienced throughout the preschool years on the children’s cognitive development in elementary school?
- What kind of interactional effects exist between the quality of stimulation in the different settings family, preschool, and elementary school and the children’s language and cognitive development in elementary school? Are there balancing effects for disadvantaged children?
