Career prospects after graduation

Demand for IT-specialists

The demand for IT specialists remains high. At the end of 2020, there will be 86,000 vacancies across all sectors, which is the second-highest figure since 2011. Software specialists are particularly in demand in the economy, according to the latest study on the labor market for IT specialists by the digital association Bitkom.1 "It is precisely during the crisis that it is decided which companies can successfully position themselves for the digital future. Now is the time to invest in digital business models, and that absolutely requires digital expertise," says Bitkom President Achim Berg.

Potential occupational fields

For graduates of the IISM course, there are many different professions that can be taken up. For example, they will work in IT companies, IT application consulting, sales, banks and insurance companies, as well as companies in the industrial, trade or communications sectors.

The following three are just examples from an even wider range of professions:

  • Outsourcing manager: You monitor and design business relationships with your company's IT service providers.
  • IT Service Manager: You manage the planning, provision and improvement of IT services, take care of the "roll-out" of new information systems in the company and organize the necessary training courses for users in the various countries.
  • IT controller: You plan and manage the company's IT organization. This includes, for example, portfolio management, budgeting and personnel requirement planning, but also the control of IT projects.

Starting salary

Due to the high demand, business informatics specialists can expect a comparatively high salary at the start of their careers: According to the Stepstone salary report for graduates2, the average gross salary is 47,600 euros per year. This value was determined from the salary data of around 13,000 career starters with academic training and a maximum of two years of professional experience. They were taken from the period from September 2019 to August 2020. The starting salary also depends on the degree. Career starters with a master's degree earn an average of 11.4 percent more than bachelor's graduates. Since the shortage of skilled workers in this field in particular has worsened over the past two years, the totals are likely to be even higher in 2021. The "Gesellschaft für Informatik" (GI) assumes that starting salaries will average between 52,000 and 54,000 euros per year, with the trend continuing to rise.
