Mary Anne Case: “Home Alone”, Friday, June 17, 09.30-11.00h, U7/01.05
Mary Anne Case is Arnold I. Shure Professor for Law at the University of Chicago.
A graduate of Yale College and the Harvard Law School, Mary Anne Case studied at the University of Munich; litigated for Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison; and was professor of law and Class of 1966 Research Professor at the University of Virginia before joining the Law School faculty. She has also served as visiting professor at New York University for the 1996-97 and 1999, 2004 Bosch Public Policy Fellow at the American Academy in Berlin, 2006-7 Crane Fellow in Law and Public Affairs at Princeton University, 2013 Samuel Rubin Visiting Professor at Columbia Law School, 2016 Fernand Braudel Fellow at the European University Institute, and 2018 Guest Professor at Goethe University Frankfurt. The subjects she has taught include feminist jurisprudence, constitutional law, regulation of sexuality, marriage, family law, sex discrimination, religious freedom, and European legal systems. She is the convenor of the Workshop on Regulating Family, Sex, and Gender and board member of the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality. While her diverse research interests include German contract law, theological anthropology, and the First Amendment, her scholarship to date has concentrated on the regulation of sex, gender, sexuality, religion, and family; and the early history of feminism.

Chiara Saraceno is possibly the most famous Italian sociologist today, especially after Mario Draghi chose her for an active role in his government. Saraceno, who was Professor of Sociology of the Family at the University of Turin and is Professor Emerita at the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung, is currently serving as honorary fellow at Collegio Carlo Alberto in Turin. Extremely relevant in the field are her works on family and gender, intergenerational relationships in families and society, social policies and poverty, comparative family patterns and policies, gender inequalities, issues of reconciliation of family and work. Her latest publications include, notably, “Coppie e famiglie. Non è questione di natura” (Feltrinelli 2016), “Mamme e papà. Gli esami non finiscono mai” (Il Mulino 2016), “L’equivoco della famiglia” (Laterza 2017), “Il Welfare” (Il Mulino 2021). She is the co-founder and co-coordinator of Alleanza per l’Infanzia (Alliance of Childhood), and she the President of the Scientific Board for the evaluation of Reddito di Cittadinanza for the Italian Government.
